The Sleep of Madame Vuillard

Oil on canvas • 24 x 33 cm
  • Édouard Vuillard - 11 November 1868 - 21 June 1940 Édouard Vuillard c. 1891-1892

Hello on this sleepy Monday!

An artist of quiet interiors and mysterious, solitary figures, Édouard Vuillard lived and worked in the rooms on the rue Truffaut in Paris where his mother ran a corset business. The artist was inspired by the rich decorative patterns of these rooms, and frequently used his mother as his model. In this painting, Madame Vuillard is sleeping, barely perceptible under the yardage of white bed sheet. The artist plays with space and perspective, texture and patterning, and the geometry and arabesques of his furnishings.

Edouard Vuillard was a painter of atmosphere and patterns. If you don't catch his artworks, or you do and you love them, we have something fun for you: How To Look At Art, our free online course that you can check in our DailyArt Courses.  :)

P.S. Vuillard's mother wasn't the only woman who inspired the artist. Meet other muses immortalized in Édouard Vuillard's beautiful paintings.
