The Stolen Kiss

Oil on canvas • 45 x 55 cm
  • Jean-Honoré Fragonard - April 4, 1732 - August 22, 1806 Jean-Honoré Fragonard 1787

Today's painting is perfect for Valentine's Day; it shows a clandestine kiss between two lovers, focusing on a young woman in a cream-colored silk gown who appears to have slipped away from her company for a secret rendezvous with a young man. The composition features a dynamic diagonal axis created by her leaning figure, the flowing shawl, and the open balcony door, culminating in the table where the shawl is draped.

Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s works often exude an air of eroticism, sensuality, and romantic whimsy, reflecting the tastes of the French aristocracy prior to the Revolution. He frequently incorporated elements of voyeurism into his paintings, as seen here, where the "stolen kiss" unfolds amidst opulent surroundings. Lavish details abound, including intricate textures, silks, lace, a floral-patterned rug, sumptuous draperies, and a shawl. The elegantly dressed ladies visible through the open door add another layer of sophistication. Fragonard's choice of themes—primarily centered on love and eroticism—was shaped by the dominant French culture of the time and catered to the pleasure-seeking court of Louis XV.

Is it really a painting by Fragonard? It is traditionally attributed so, thanks to an etching published in 1788 that names him as the artist. While the style closely resembles Fragonard’s works, however, some scholars have noted stylistic elements that are more characteristic of Marguerite Gérard, Fragonard's sister-in-law and apprentice. As a result, some experts believe the painting may be a collaboration between Gérard and Fragonard or possibly the work of Gérard alone.
