Autumn at Saruiwa, Shiobara

colored woodcut • 38 x 24.4 cm
  • Hasui Kawase - May 18, 1883 - November 7, 1957 Hasui Kawase 1949

Today we have something calming for you—a winding road setting on the side of the mountain in beautiful, scenic Shiobara. Shiobara was a picturesque and tranquil town (now part of Nasushiobara) located in Tochigi Prefecture in Japan. Nestled in the scenic Nasu Mountains, Shiobara is renowned for its natural beauty and relaxing hot springs.

The woodcut was made by Hasui Kawase, who was a prominent Japanese artist known for his landscape prints that captured the beauty of various regions in Japan. He is considered one of the most important figures in the shin-hanga (new prints) movement, which sought to revive and modernize traditional ukiyo-e (technique of woodblock printing) techniques in the 20th century.

Look at these rich colors of the fall. Wonderful!
