On this day in 1866, Wassily Kandinsky, one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art, was born. Between 1909 and 1911, this pivotal figure in 20th-century art resided and worked in Murnau, a picturesque village nestled in the Bavarian Alps. During this period, the artist underwent a significant artistic transformation, shifting away from the direct representation of nature and embracing a more abstract approach. He began to place his faith in the evocative power of color.

In this particular painting capturing the winter landscape, Kandinsky deliberately limited his color palette to include subtle shades of yellow, pink, blue, and black. These colors were drawn from his immediate visual observations, as he aimed to convey the myriad interplays of light on the snow, illuminated by the setting sun. The composition itself emphasized the spatial depth of the landscape.

Through his choice of subject matter and his technique of applying paint, Kandinsky skillfully introduced a captivating tension between stillness and motion within the canvas.
