Delicate.

That would be the one word we could use to describe this interpretation of winter from 1907, made by the Lithuanian composer painter M. K. Čiurlionis in his mature cycle, verging on the border of abstraction.

The whole cycle does not follow a narrative but instead goes along the winter through colors, moods, and forms, thus transforming them into generalized symbols and metaphors of the winter. Take, for example, this painting. While one tree still has a shining star above it, the other is already burnt out (or perhaps not yet lit). In a few lines and colors, M. K. Čiurlionis creates an image representing the stillness and possible sudden change of winter. You know, those days when the air is crisp, the snow is crunchy, and you can see your breath in the air? And it takes just one gust of wind for it all to change from welcoming and cozy to chaotic and destructive.

The Winter cycle is one of M. K. Čiurlionis most masterful creations in terms of plasticity, and some might even argue it is one of the first sources of abstraction in European art. You can see the whole cycle on a new platform that houses all information about M. K. Čiurlionis.
