Window Opening on Nice

Oil on canvas • 65 x 81 cm
  • Raoul Dufy - 3 June 1877 - 23 March 1953 Raoul Dufy 1928

Raoul Dufy, a French painter associated with the Fauvist movement, moved to Nice in 1900, seeking a change of scenery and a more temperate climate for health reasons. This move had a profound impact on his art. Nice's stunning Mediterranean coastline, with its azure waters and vibrant landscapes, gave him many subjects to explore. The city's rich cultural environment and the presence of other artists also contributed to his artistic development. He often depicted the city's charming streets, bustling markets, scenic promenades, and its picturesque coastline.

This composition depicts a hotel room in Nice. Despite it being the view of one room, from the opened window, one can gaze out at the beach, stirring the desire to travel, and the room's fashionable interior is reflected in the mirror placed in the center. With its vivid colors and rhythmical lines, this piece forms an almost symphonic composition.

P.P.S. Another famous Fauvist who liked to paint interiors was Henri Matisse. Did you know he was obsessed with goldfish, which he depicted in many of his paintings
