Anna Kirstine Brøndum was born in Skagen, Denmark. She was the only member of the Skagen Painters who was both born and raised in Skagen, where her father owned the important Brøndums Hotel. From an early age, Anna displayed a great artistic talent and was introduced to pictorial art through the many artists who came to Skagen to paint, drawn by the unique light of northern Jutland.

She studied drawing for three years at the Vilhelm Kyhn College of Painting in Copenhagen, where she developed her own distinctive style and pioneered the study of color interactions in natural light. She later continued her education in Paris at the atelier of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, alongside Marie Triepcke, who would later marry fellow Skagen painter Peder Severin Krøyer. In 1880, Anna married painter Michael Ancher, whom she had met in Skagen. The couple had one daughter, Helga Ancher. Despite societal expectations that married women should focus on domestic life, Anna remained dedicated to her art.

Being one of Denmark’s greatest painters, Anna Ancher is well-known for her mastery of character portrayal and her innovative use of color. She was an important figure leading the modern breakthrough in Nordic art, presenting a more truthful depiction of reality. She often painted interiors and scenes from the everyday lives of Skagen’s fishermen, women, and children, with a keen focus on light and color.
