Giovanni Paolo Panini, an Italian painter and architect of the 18th century, distinguished himself as the first artist to specialize in ruins, particularly in the captivating depictions of Ancient Rome. His expertise lay in Roman vedute, panoramic views that emphasized the city's grandeur.

Utilizing a large canvas, Panini has rendered an elaborate gallery here portraying celebrated ancient monuments and sculptures from in and around Rome. It features several figures admiring artworks near the Aldobrandini Wedding fresco.

Iconic landmarks such as the Pantheon, Colosseum, Trajan's column, and the Farnese Hercules can be identified in his paintings and showcase his deep appreciation for the classical heritage of the eternal city.

This notable work was commissioned by the Count de Stainville (later the Duke de Choiseul). He is featured in the center of the painting with guidebook in hand. Panini has also included his own likeness behind the chair in a subservient position when compared to his patron.

Panini's trademark ability to capture the essence of Ancient Rome has left an enduring mark, allowing viewers to glimpse the splendor of the past through his artistic vision. Multiple versions of this painting exist, housed in Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart; Gemäldegalerie, Berlin; and Musée du Louvre, Paris.
