Portrait of a Young Woman

Tempera on wood • 44 x 32 cm
  • Domenico Ghirlandaio - 1449 - 11 January 1494 Domenico Ghirlandaio 1490

Domenico Ghirlandaio was an Italian Renaissance painter born in Florence. He led a large and efficient workshop, and the famous Michelangelo was one of his apprentices.

Like Botticelli, Ghirlandaio's portrayals of women blend idealistic embellishment with a coherent decorative theme, reflecting the era's burgeoning interest in portraiture among the middle class and a preference for lifelike representation. The artist's detailed attention to the interplay of form and the subtlety of color reveals a pursuit of compositional order as an aesthetic ideal. This approach aligns with the broader humanistic movement in art during the time.

The artwork exemplifies Quattrocento portraiture, positioning the figure in a three-quarter stance against a nondescript backdrop, a common practice before adopting landscapes as backgrounds. The portrait, terminating just below the shoulders, eschews intricate detail in favor of a more naturalistic portrayal, embodying the artist's intent to "capture reality."
