Although Monet began his Morning on the Seine series in 1896, he did not complete it until 1897 because of the weather. After patiently scouting views along the river, he painted from a boat he had converted into a floating studio. He arose before dawn to reach his boat early enough to capture the changing effects of light at sunrise. Then he lined up the canvases on easels in his studio to complete them.
