Vincent van Gogh's period in Arles is regarded as his most prolific. During the 12 months he spent there, he produced an incredible 187 paintings and drawings, including his most famous ones. In his initial weeks, the artist devoted nearly every day to capturing the vibrant blossoms of the orchards on his canvas. Within a short span, he completed 15 paintings of orchards, buoyed by the hope that these works would find a market, believing their cheerful subjects would uplift spirits.

Van Gogh, pleased with the ensemble of works, envisioned grouping them into decorative triptychs, a concept he admired in Japanese art. An earlier, nearly identical version of this painting is in the collection of The Kröller-Müller Museum, which van Gogh dedicated to a painter who taught him the basics of painting, Anton Mauve, after he saw his death notice. This one was sent to van Gogh's brother Theo.
