Frank Benson was an American artist from Salem, Massachusetts, known for his Realistic portraits, American Impressionist paintings, watercolors, and etchings. He began his career painting portraits of distinguished families and murals for the Library of Congress. Some of his best-known paintings depict his daughters outdoors at Benson's summer home, Wooster Farm, on the island of North Haven. Today we present such a painting, to get a little bit more into the summer mood. :)
The model is the artist’s daughter, Eleanor. Look at her dress, which serves as a canvas for Benson’s brushstrokes, rendered in shades of white, pink, and violet, accented by the blue and violet shadows characteristic of Impressionism. Eleanor is standing straight at the coast and looking for something or someone. What is she looking at?
P.S. A woman on the seashore lit by a summer light ... this is a topic typical for another great artist of the turn of the 20th century... Discover the luminous art of Joaquín Sorolla.
