We have featured Frederic Edwin Church's paintings many times before; you may recognize him from amazing canvases depicting jungles, waterfalls, and exotic fauna and flora. But today we will show you something different, a building you may without a doubt recognize.

Church traveled to Greece in 1869, spending several weeks in Athens, where he created numerous studies and oil sketches of the Parthenon ruins. Though he hoped to complete a large painting of the iconic temple while still abroad, it wasn’t until 1871—after receiving a commission from financier and philanthropist Morris K. Jesup—that he began work on the grand canvas. By February, Church was already obsessed with what he called "a big Parthenon," and by May, the painting was likely complete. He expressed particular concern over how the work would be lit in Jesup’s home.
