The vibrant colors and skillfully captured interplay of light and shadow on the rutted track make this one of Camille Corot's most captivating landscapes. The warm tones of the seated figure draw attention, as do the flourishing branches of the prominent central tree. Corot knew the countryside around Ville-d'Avray well, as his family resided in this small town west of Paris. This painting was likely created just before Corot departed for Italy in 1825 and was retouched around 1850. The composition and treatment of light may also reflect Corot's response to John Constable's paintings, which were exhibited in Paris in the mid-1820s.
P.S. Corot was part of the Barbizon School, a group of French painters who loved to depict nature. Their works and approach to art inspired another even more famous group of artists ... the Impressionists! Learn more about the Barbizon School!
