Santiago Rusiñol was a Catalan painter, poet, journalist, collector, and playwright. He was one of the leaders of the Catalan modernism. In 1897, he traveled to Granada, where he completed a series of garden paintings inspired by the elegance of Nasrid parterres, defined by plants, water, light, and architectural elements. After his stay in Granada, Rusiñol experimented with new artistic techniques, painting gardens in various locations where he lived or visited, including Sitges, Valencia, Játiva, Majorca, and especially Aranjuez. He first discovered Aranjuez at the age of 37 and continued to return to its melancholic landscapes for the rest of his life, even passing away there. At that time, the Royal Residence in Aranjuez was relatively forgotten, as the monarchy had ceased visiting it nearly a century earlier, and Rusiñol's paintings played a key role in raising awareness and appreciation of the town's beauty.
