To all our friends in the United States and everyone who celebrates it: Happy Thanksgiving!
On this special day, we wanted to share a painting that shows what Thanksgiving is about—a meal with family or friends!
In this detailed painting, 20-year-old Andries van Bochoven presents himself as a painter, seated with his family as they await dinner at a prepared table. His father, Rutger, holds a Bible, while his daughters likely hold catechisms. Each figure in the portrait is labeled with their name and date of birth. Tragically, within four years of the painting’s completion, Andries, his stepmother, his brother Herman, and his sister Josina had all passed away. The portrait stayed with his father until his own death, serving as a poignant reminder of happier days.
Happy celebrations!
