The Pond (Mist)

Julia Beck was a Swedish painter who lived from 1853 to 1935. This masterpiece is celebrated as one of her finest works.  At first sight, we may think it is just a regular landscape with a pond, nothing special. But please take a closer look at its modernistic qualities, both in terms of composition and technique. The painting's distinctiveness is also marked by a series of small pinholes along its outer margins, likely due to Beck's technique of mounting the canvas on a panel for outdoor painting. P.S. Interestingly enough, Julia Beck was more successful in Paris, than in her native Sweden. Luckily her beautiful paintings are now slowly being rediscovered. Explore them with us!
