August is coming to an end!

In 1897, Paul Signac created a series of seven paintings capturing Mont Saint-Michel, the iconic medieval monastery perched on the Normandy coast of northwestern France. In this particular version, the monument is shown at high tide, encircled by soft blue waters beneath a mauve-hued sunset. Painted six years after the death of his friend and mentor Georges Seurat, the series represents a crucial moment in Signac’s artistic evolution. Departing from the precise dots of pointillism, he adopted a technique of applying small, vibrant patches of color—like a mosaic of luminous tiles. The atmosphere and play of shimmering light across sea and sky ... this is what this beautiful painting is about.

P.S. If you love Signac’s luminous coastal views, you’ll enjoy our Sea, Ships & Beaches postcards collection, full of stunning maritime scenes.
