July will be the month of the world-famous Rijksmuseum!

Today, we start our monthly partnership with this amazing museum in Amsterdam. This means that every Sunday we will present a piece from their collection and share other artworks in our social media. Follow us there!

Let's move to today's painting. In it, the Dutch painter Judith Leyster captures a moment of playful mischief and potential mayhem. The boy, dressed in vibrant colors, slyly snatches a treat from under the cat’s nose while shielding it from his companion’s eager hands. The cat, clearly unimpressed, looks moments away from scratching, adding a touch of tension to the otherwise lighthearted scene.

Leyster’s loose, expressive brushwork enhances the energy and spontaneity of the moment, making the scene feel as if it’s unfolding right before our eyes.

As one of the few successful female painters of her time, Leyster broke barriers in the male-dominated art world of the Dutch Republic. Her work is lively, witty, and full of personality. Just like the works of other women artists featured in our postcard set!  :)

P.S. If you want to learn more about this amazing artist (and see her art), here's the story of Judith Leyster, the leading star of the Dutch Golden Age!
