Wassily Kandinsky was a pioneer of abstraction in Western art. During the 1920s, he taught introductory design and advanced theory at the Bauhaus, in addition to leading painting classes and a workshop where he expanded his color theory with new insights from the psychology of form. His studies of points and lines culminated in his second major theoretical text, Point and Line to Plane (1926). In it, Kandinsky examined how forces act upon straight lines and how contrasts arise between curved and angled forms—research that paralleled contemporary Gestalt psychology, also explored at the Bauhaus.

Geometric elements increasingly shaped both his teaching and his art, with the circle, half-circle, angle, straight line, and curve becoming central motifs. This was one of the most productive phases of his career. His paintings from this period are characterized by richly colored planes and subtle gradations, as evident in the work presented here, which marks his transition away from the prevailing currents of Constructivism and Suprematism toward a distinctly personal language of abstraction.
