  • Kamisaka Sekka - 1866 - 1942 Kamisaka Sekka

    1899–1900

Born into a samurai family in Kyoto, Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) was a significant and influential Japanese artist of the early 20th century. Printed originally in subscription editions of three prints, A Thousand Grasses (Chigusa) is Sekka’s first major work. One of his great masterworks, this three-volume set of woodblocks included stylized landscapes and nature scenes as well as subjects from Japanese folklore and decorative arts. Published by Unsodo, the woodblocks were printed to the highest standards, including the addition of mica and embossing. Boldly designed with simplified forms, these works are elegant and timeless modern images.

Beautiful, isn't it? Today, we present only one page from Chigusa, but we will do more in the future, I promise!
