The Education of the Virgin

Oil on canvas • 147 x 124 cm

  • Michaelina Wautier - 1604 - 1689 Michaelina Wautier

    1656

At a time when women artists were expected to confine themselves to painting flowers or modest portraits, Michaelina Wautier boldly broke every boundary. Born in Mons, Belgium, in 1604 and later active in Brussels, she painted portraits, still lifes, scenes of daily life, and, most remarkably, ambitious history paintings on a grand scale. Her versatility and confidence were exceptional for her era, and her mastery was such that many of her works were long misattributed to men.

This painting leaves no doubt about its authorship. Signed proudly “Michaelina Wautier invenit et fecit” (meaning “Michaelina Wautier invented and made it”), it declares her complete authorship and creative independence. The scene of the Virgin’s education radiates calm dignity and grace, yet it also speaks of the courage of a woman claiming her rightful place among the great artists of her time.

Today, this work continues to receive the recognition it deserves. It is currently on view at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna and will travel to the Royal Academy of Arts in London in March 2026, where it stands as a luminous testament to Michaelina’s vision and voice.
