On this day in 1853, one of the most famous artists in art history was born... yes, it was Vincent van Gogh! For this occasion, we present a rather mysterious painting...

This still life is not mentioned in Van Gogh’s letters, and its position within his artistic production has long puzzled scholars. It is so different from what we usually associate with van Gogh. The subject relates closely to the mixed summer bouquets he painted in Paris, the near-abstract floral wallpaper he painted in Arles, and the white porcelain vase in Irises from Saint-Rémy. Yet the painting’s palette and handling—most notably its blues and ochers and its graphic, brick-like hatchings—align it decisively with the landscapes Van Gogh produced in Auvers in the weeks leading up to his death on July 29, 1890.

P.S. Besides self-portraits and landscapes, Van Gogh also produced an immense number of floral artworks. Discover Van Gogh's flower paintings! Some of them are included in our Flowers in Art 50 Postcards Set.  :)
