Little Girl in a Blue Armchair

oil on canvas • 129.8 x 89.5 cm
  • Mary Cassatt - May 22, 1844 - June 14, 1926 Mary Cassatt 1878

In 1877, the works of American artist Mary Cassatt proposed to the Paris Salon were rejected and, for the first time in seven years, she had no works showing there. At this low point in her career, Edgar Degas invited her to exhibit with the Impressionists. They already had one female member, Berthe Morisot, who became Cassatt’s friend and colleague. Cassatt felt comfortable with the Impressionists and joined their cause enthusiastically, declaring: “We are carrying on a despairing fight and need all our forces.” Cassatt exhibited eleven of her paintings at the event, including this piece. This stunning portrayal of a young girl lolling inelegantly on an armchair with an expression suggesting modelling was far from her occupation of choice, is a clear indication of Cassatt’s innate ability to capture the inner life of her subjects.

P.S. Although, Mary Cassatt did not have children of her own, she loved to portray them with their mothers. <3
