Painted in 1919, this luminous landscape shows the lush estate of Sa Coma in Valldemossa on Mallorca’s east coast. The Catalonian artist Santiago Rusiñol first discovered the island in 1899, when he traveled there to recover from illness. The experience left a lasting impression. Mallorca soon became a recurring destination for the artist, who wandered through its gardens and countryside, capturing their atmosphere with a rich, resonant palette. He later called it the “island of tranquility,” the title of the book he devoted to the island in 1922.

Rusiñol was a central figure of Catalan Modernism and one of the founders of the artistic gathering place Els Quatre Gats. Although he traveled widely and spent time in Paris, Mallorca remained one of his greatest sources of inspiration. His paintings of the island—particularly its gardens and quiet landscapes—are among the most serene works of his career.

Over time, Rusiñol moved away from scenes populated by figures and instead focused on the quiet poetry of nature itself. The gardens and landscapes he painted across Spain became some of his most recognizable subjects. In recognition of his deep connection with Mallorca, the city of Palma erected a monument in his honor in 1935, celebrating the artist who helped shape the island’s poetic image in modern art.
