This painting shows a woman reclining on an upholstered couch on a warm summer day, as light filters through a partially lowered awning and reveals a glimpse of the beach beyond. In his mature works, James Tissot—a French painter, illustrator, and caricaturist—incorporated elements of realism, early Impressionism, and academic art into his work and often focused less on storytelling than on catching a particular atmosphere, such as the quiet languor of a summer afternoon in this painting. The model is believed to be Kathleen Newton, born Kathleen Ashburnham Kelly (1854–1882), who was Tissot’s companion from 1876 until her early death from tuberculosis at age 28.
