The story of Leda and the Swan was the subject of two compositions by Leonardo da Vinci, but neither survived as paintings with only a few drawings/sketches that exist today of Leda by Leonardo. The original was last recorded in the French royal Château de Fontainebleau in 1625. However, the painting is known from many copies - this one housed at the Galleria Borghese in Rome, Italy, is attributed to Giovanni Antonio Bazzi, also known as Il Sodoma, who painted in a manner that superimposed the High Renaissance style of early 16th-century Rome onto the traditions of the provincial Sienese school.
