Edvard Munch traveled to the south of France in the early 1890’s and discovered a fondness for gambling. He arrived in Paris during the festivities of the Exposition Universelle and roomed with two fellow Norwegian artists. He spent his mornings at Bonnat's busy studio (which included live female models) and afternoons at the exhibition, galleries, and museums (where students were to make copies). His money problems lead his to gambling and subsequent journeys to Monte Carlo.
