Orphan Girl at the Cemetery

oil on canvas • 66 × 54 cm
  • Eugène Delacroix - 26 April 1798 - 13 August 1863 Eugène Delacroix c. 1823

Believed to be a preparatory work in oil for the artist's later Massacre at Chios, Orphan Girl at the Cemetery is nevertheless considered a masterpiece in its own right. The painting depicts a young girl visiting a cemetery, probably in the French countryside. It shows an air of sorrow and fearfulness with tears welling from the eyes of the sorrowful young woman.
