Guardi was a Venetian painter of vedute - highly detailed, usually large-scale paintings of cityscapes or other vistas. Guardi developed his own style, different from other Venetian vedute painters, based on a freer handling of paint. In this veduta, he took particular pleasure in rendering the vibrant atmosphere of Venetian light and its dazzling effect on water.
