oil on wood • 130,8 x 118,5
  • Anthony van Dyck - 22 March 1599 - 9 December 1641 Anthony van Dyck 1629

Father Jean-Charles was a Jesuit, a member of the religious order founded by Ignatius of Loyola. He had advanced knowledge in mathematics and served at the Spanish court as a cosmographer and a specialist in warfare. Here he is portrayed with several instruments, that can be used in both of these categories. We can see a globe, a Holland circle, a quadrant and plumb line, a compass in his hand and some scientific writings.
