This watercolor portrays a young woman reclining on an Empire revival-style couch. The woman at leisure was a popular subject in late nineteenth century American painting. An exceptionally fresh demonstration of Wiles's work in watercolour, The Green Cushion was awarded the William T. Evans Prize for the best entry at the American Water Colour Society's 1897 exhibition. Irving Ramsey Wiles in his early years worked as an illustrator for American magazines, and later he devoted himself with great success to portraiture. He was a member of the Society of American Artists, which prefaced his 1897 election into the National Academy of Design as an associate. Wiles was also a member of the American Water Color Society.
