Madame Raymond de Verninac

oil on canvas • 145 x 112 cm
  • Jacques-Louis David - August 30, 1748 - December 29, 1825 Jacques-Louis David 1799

Madame Raymond de Verninac was Henriette, the elder sister of Eugène Delacroix. Here, she is seventeen years old. The white antique dress she is wearing is reminiscent of the one David painted in the The Intervention of the Sabine Women. The signature at the bottom of the portrait reads: “David fecit anno Septimo” (David did this in the year seven – i.e. of the French revolutionary calendar).
