Aniela Cukierówna was a Warsaw-based graphic artist and illustrator, but she gained recognition primarily as an author of woodcuts. Her favorite theme was cityscapes. Today, we would like to put the spotlight on her work titled View from Kazimierz Dolny, from 1932.

In the first half of the 20th century, Kazimierz was a hotspot of the artistic milieu. Breathtaking landscapes in the area drew throngs of artists to the town. The vastly popular outdoor painting sessions, attended by prominent painters and illustrators as well as art students or amateurs, went down in history. Cukierówna was associated with an arts collective making routine visits to Kazimierz. The artist created an entire cycle of landscapes, with her works exhibited at the Institute of Arts Propaganda in Warsaw in 1938. Patrons at the exhibition marveled at the elements that are still considered the strongest point of Cukierówna’s oeuvre—depictions of architecture and strong, contrasting colors.

Cukierówna’s works and pieces by other pre-war Jewish artists are available to view on the Delet portal.
