Today it's the last day of Women's History Month. But it's not the last day of our featuring women artists in DailyArt and DailyArt Magazine! We promise to focus on women artists in the following months as well.  : )

We rarely present modern or contemporary art because of the copyrights so we are very happy that today we can present you the Spanish Cubist, María Blanchard.

This piece is from a time when María Blanchard was very close to Juan Gris; it constitutes the turning point in her Cubist work. This mainly focused on still lifes, in which she found her own way of applying the premises of the movement led by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. She joined the Cubist art group and soon began developing her own style of Cubism, involving a rich use of color and the incorporation of personal elements.

For Cubist Composition Blanchard used a palette dominated by the usual earth colors, dead leaf greens, greys, blacks, and whites, but in this case, her loyalty to Juan Gris’ aesthetic principles involving color led her to bring shades that were far more daring, ranging from golden or orange yellow to lemon yellow. The bright and vividly colored painting is like the veiled homage Blanchard wished to pay to her teacher, Juan Gris.

P.S. Here you can read about Alexandra Exter, Blanchard's fellow female painter and Cubist whose path led from the Russian Empire to Paris.
