Little Walter’s Toys

oil on canvas • 60 x 50 cm
  • August Macke - 3 January 1887 - 26 September 1914 August Macke 1912

This is a very private work, so it is hardly surprising that it remained in the possession of the Macke family for many years (until 1959). In addition to a potted plant, the artist has painted the toys of his two-year-old son Walter:  soft toys, balls and, a Russian matryoshka doll. The work acquires a remarkable, child-friendly clarity through the bright light shining down from top left, the striking top view and the bold use of the intrinsic value of the colors. The red-and-green contrast enlivens the composition, whose expressivity is further heightened by the black contours and the white patches on the bodies of the soft toys.

We present today's painting thanks to the Städel Museum.  : )

Today Marta, who is a part of the core DailyArt Magazine team, is having her birthday! As she loves guinea pigs (and owns two) we wanted to present this beautiful painting on this occasion!  : )))))))

P.S. Here's everything you need to know about Expressionism!
