  • Mark Lancelot Symons - 1886 - 1935 Mark Lancelot Symons c. 1931

Mark Lancelot Symons was a British Symbolist painter with religious overtones, and he was a follower of the Pre-Raphaelite artists. His father was the artist William Christian Symons, and the family was staunchly Catholic. His brother Phillip became a Benedictine monk and served as organist at Downside Abbey. Mark attempted on several occasions to enter the priesthood but eventually decided against. He worked for the Catholic Evidence Guild (1918 to 1924) and often addressed people at Hyde Park Corner in London.

He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1905 to 1909, and his circle of artist friends included Whistler, Sargent, and Hercules Brabazon. It wasn't until 1924 that he turned to painting full-time, exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1927 and thereafter until his death.

Here, he presents a joyful scene of a Boxing Day, where the children, still in pajamas, are playing with their new toys.
