A Young Girl in Jutland Writing her Beloved's Name on a Misty Window

  • Christen Dalsgaard - 30 October 1824 - 11 February 1907 Christen Dalsgaard 1852

Christen Dalsgaard was a Danish painter. He was a late student of Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, who is often referred to as the "Father of Danish painting" (you can check his works in our Archive).  Dalsgaard painted primarily genre paintings, including national romantic folk scenes rooted in the grasslands of Jutland. He paid great attention to details—folk costumes, the manners and habits of the people, and architecture and landscape. He was a storyteller. His artistic works, as well as those of his contemporaries, opened the way for more realistic paintings in the late 1800s. In today's painting we see a girl missing her love so badly, that she is writing the boy's name on a window. Maybe she thinks that writing his name will make him come back to her sooner, like some kind of spell?  Heart-tugging!  :)

We present today's work thanks to the Statens Museum for Kunst in Denmark.

This girl is waiting for her love as much as we are waiting for our new, updated version of the DailyArt app.  :D  Right now it seems we will be releasing it in January or February 2023. It is a huge operation that will cost us tons of money, so we are asking you for your support.  If you would like to donate and help us, check out the details on how you can do it. Every cent counts to us. Thank you so much!  :)

P.S. You definitely know this Danish painter! See quiet and poetic interiors by Vilhelm Hammershøi; beautiful isn't it?
