Please take some time to have a look at it; not only will you see a new design, there are so many new features like Discover, City Guides, Collections, and an improved Search.  In general all the artworks we have been featuring for the past 10 years are so much easier to explore now.  :)  You can use the app on all mobile devices you own; the login process is much simpler now and the app should be much faster.  :)  As you will see, the change is massive. We were able to develop this new version only thanks to your help.  Thank you so much!  You're the best.  <3  ENJOY!

As we celebrate, today we present a beautiful ukiyo-e woodcut with a starry night and fireworks.  :)

The fireworks display at Ryōgoku Bridge was a recurring theme in ukiyo-e prints. This annual festival that takes place on the last Saturday in July marks the opening of the pleasure boating season on the Sumida River. This tradition can be traced back to the Kyōhō famine in 1732, when fireworks were launched as part of commemoration for the dead. These were mourning observances for the dead, as well as celebrations of life, and entertainment for the poverty-stricken masses. Since the event was held outdoors, inhabitants of Edo (today's Tokyo) from all levels of society could participate and enjoy it. On the river, there were party boats that included covered areas for entertainment by geisha and musicians, as well as attendants to serve wealthy clients. The festival is still being celebrated today.  :)
