Fruit and Flowers

oil on canvas • 30 × 39 in. (76.2 × 99.1 cm)
  • Orsola Maddalena Caccia - December 4th 1596 - July 26th 1676 Orsola Maddalena Caccia ca. 1630

With its mountain of fruit and dance of flowers in the background, this is one of the most ambitious still-life compositions by Orsola Maddalena Caccia. This important Italian woman artist ran a studio that supported an Ursuline convent at Moncalvo. Her idiosyncratic way of individuating each stem of the tulips and irises results in a captivating effect of surface pattern.
