The Swedish painter Pelle Swedlund was a dreamer and lyricist, who created moody, symbolist landscapes based on real places that become unforgettable. The one we present today definitely deserves more recognition.
Swedlund executed pictures of old abandoned houses by mirroring canals, cityscapes with narrow streets and peaceful places with people, and landscape paintings. Many of Swedlund's motifs are from abroad, as he lived abroad for several decades after his studies at the Art Academy. In a broad technique and with musty colors, he painted urban motifs from Flanders in Belgium and France. When he returned home to Sweden, his motifs from Visby became popular. His paintings have a lyrical quality.
In this painting, Swedlund has depicted Högklint on Gotland's west coast, about 7 kilometers south of Visby. The rock, which is one of the most spectacular cliffs on Gotland, is made up partly of limestone. It plunges 46 meters almost vertically into the sea.
