Sun

Oil on canvas • 155 × 155 cm
  • Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo - July 28, 1868 - June 14, 1907 Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo 1904

Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, an Italian Divisionist painter, outlined the theme of his painting for the first time while writing to his friend, specifying that he wanted to choose "eternal subjects" and, therefore that he wanted to deal with "the beautiful nature that absorbs man and annihilates him to camp itself shining with its immortal beauty ..."

The sun appears on the line of hills with its spherical image, which coincides with maximum white and from which a dense sequence of strokes radiates, which progressively lengthen towards the edges of the canvas and which pass from yellow to orange, to purple and green. The glow does not eliminate but reabsorbs and veils the perception of the surrounding nature and of the wide valley in the foreground with trees and farmhouses whose essential forms can be glimpsed. Everything creates a very atmospheric piece.
