Carl Blechen was a German landscape painter. Initially trained as a banker, Blechen's journey into art began at the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1822. In 1835, Blechen assumed the role of professor at the Academy of Arts in Berlin, a position greatly facilitated by the influential architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who deeply admired his works and ardently endorsed his appointment. What set Blechen apart was his departure from the Romanticism of his era, embracing instead a pioneering new realism. His paintings were marked by their radiant play of light and color, executed with a remarkable delicacy of touch.

In 1832, Friedrich Wilhelm III entrusted Blechen with a special commission—to paint the palm house, a structure designed by Schinkel and located on the Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island). The intention was to create a diptych that the king could present to his daughter, the Tsarina of Russia. Blechen approached this commission with great care, as it held significant personal importance. He meticulously crafted this remarkable study alongside producing numerous preparatory drawings, capturing the abundant sunlight streaming into the space, illuminating the tropical flora, and evoking a fragrant climate. The presence of awaiting odalisques in the composition enhances the sense of exotic allure, already heightened by the Indian architectural motifs within the scene.

In the middle of winter, I thought that this scene could warm us a bit.  :)
