Carl Krenek, born in Vienna in 1880, was a versatile artist known for his expertise in landscape, historical, and genre painting, as well as graphic art. He was a dedicated member of the Austrian Artists' Association. His artistic journey commenced in 1896 when he attended the Manufakturzeichenschule (Manufacture School for Drawing) and Lehranstalt für Textilindustrie (Textile Industry Institute) until 1898. Subsequently, he pursued his studies at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule until 1906 under the guidance of renowned instructors such as Willibald Schulmeister, Alfred Roller, Felician von Myrbach, Koloman Moser, and Carl Otto Czeschka.

In 1906, Krenek was awarded a scholarship that led him to Paris, passing through Germany. Between 1907 and 1908, he further honed his painting skills at an academy under the tutelage of Heinrich Lefler. He remained dedicated to the Lefler-Moser school even after the conclusion of World War I. Working in a decorative studio in Vienna-Liesing, he primarily focused on depicting landscapes from the Vienna region and the picturesque Wachau. Krenek exhibited a particular fondness for watercolor and tempera, and his artistic style, characterized by a strong emphasis on drawing, embraced simplified forms and colors.

Throughout his career, Krenek's artworks found their way into numerous exhibitions, showcasing his talent and creativity. The artist passed away in Vienna in 1948, leaving a legacy of artistic achievement and contributions to the Austrian art scene.

Today's woodcut reminds me a bit of Félix Vallotton's works, but this ornamentation ... is amazing!
