Composition IX

Oil on canvas • 195 x 113.5 cm
  • Wassily Kandinsky - December 16, 1866 - December 13, 1944 Wassily Kandinsky 1936

This calm and majestic piece contrasts the rigid and the fluid, the organic and the structured, introducing a fresh appreciation for the curve as a motif. In his work Canvas, Space, etc. Wassily Kandinsky, who was a great abstract painter, shared a moment of inspiration: observing from his window, he noted the silent, unmoving factory chimneys. Suddenly, smoke started to billow from one, bending in the wind and shifting in color, transforming the scene entirely. This visual, akin to transferring images rising to the surface, stands in stark contrast to the bold, colored diagonal lines that are rare in Kandinsky's repertoire, highlighting the dynamic interplay between form and color.

This is the smallest of Kandinsky's Compositions. By this term, he refers to an exceptional category of works that result from "expressions forming in the same way (but always particularly slowly) within me, which I take up at length, and in an almost pedantic manner, after the first sketches. I call this type of images Compositions. Here, reason, consciousness, intentionality, and effectiveness play a predominant role; only, it is not calculation, but feeling that always prevails."
