An Out-of-Doors Study

Oil on canvas • 65.9 × 80.6 cm
  • John Singer Sargent - January 12, 1856 - April 14, 1925 John Singer Sargent 1889

During the summer of 1889, while staying at Fladbury Rectory in Worcestershire, John Singer Sargent hosted French painter Paul Helleu and his young wife, Alice. Sargent's painting captures an artist at work outdoors, focusing on the very act of painting itself. He meticulously depicts Paul's precise hand position and his deep focus as he paints, while Alice appears disengaged, looking away from her husband. This piece is also an experimental one, with a composition thoughtfully organized around the diagonal alignment of a red canoe and the easel. Within this open-air setting, Sargent deftly constructs detailed portraits of his friends.

Such a delightful atmosphere! We hope you are having a similarly pleasant day today.  :)
