Setting Out to Sea. Valencia

Oil on canvas • 111 x 91 cm
  • Joaquín Sorolla - February 27, 1863 - August 10, 1923 Joaquín Sorolla 1908

Painted in late summer of 1908 on Malvarrosa beach in Valencia, the masterpiece presents what the Spanish painter Joaquín Sorolla loved: the sea and complementary aspects of daily life in the local fishing community. The scene unfolds on the water, showcasing the fishermen’s work with a simple and majestic grace. We see two figures sitting in the stern of a large fishing boat, shaded by its magnificent sail. They guide the massive yet graceful vessel out to sea with ease, as sunlight illuminates the sail and wooden deck, and the gentle waves lap against the hull. The figures are enveloped in an atmosphere of light and water, typical of Sorolla’s masterful use of color and texture. The artist's skill lies not only in his fluid brushstrokes and radiant color but in his ability to ennoble everyday scenes of labor, drawing on both classical influences and the natural beauty of his native Valencia.
