Time to start this week with some beautiful flowers!
Max Schlichting was a painter of German Impressionism. The color sketch we present today was created during his study period at the Académie Julian in Paris, where many foreigners studied at the time because admission to the École des Beaux-Arts was almost impossible.
The motif of the poppy field was likely familiar to the rising artist from his time in Berlin. Here, Schlichting chose a top-down view that fully showed the flowers. This resulted in a uniform surface with red and pink blossoms set against a rich green background. Unlike Claude Monet, who often depicted poppy fields as a diffuse red area in the landscape, Schlichting was interested in the fine structure of the flowers and the various shades of green.
