Giovanna Garzoni
The rediscovery of Giovanna Garzoni as one of the greatest Baroque artists began with the landmark exhibition of Italian still-life painting held in Naples, Rotterdam, and Zurich in 1964. Since then, scholars have reconstructed the life of this remarkable artist, whose refined works were admired at the courts of Florence, Naples, Rome, and Turin, as well as in France.
She began her career producing religious, mythological, and allegorical subjects but became especially celebrated for her delicate botanical still lifes executed in tempera and watercolor. She often combined objects in inventive ways—pairing botanical specimens with Asian porcelain, exotic seashells, or rare fruits—creating compositions that are both scientific and poetic. In recent years, scholars have also interpreted her work through the lens of protofeminist ideas and subtle references to the female body.
Born to a modest Venetian family living temporarily in Ascoli Piceno, Garzoni led an unusually independent life, traveling between artistic centers before settling permanently in Rome in 1651. Deeply connected to the Accademia di San Luca, she ultimately left her estate to the institution, which honored her with a commemorative monument and portrait in the church of Santi Luca e Martina. Known in her own time as “the Chaste Giovanna” because of her vow to remain a virgin, she maintained both personal independence and professional success.
