We hope you have a great Sunday! Today we present a masterpiece from our special partnership with the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Enjoy!  :)

"Art is art, nature is nature; you cannot improve upon it," Emily Carr famously declared. This sentiment, central to her philosophy, underscores the way she approached her art—translating the natural world into works that resonate with profound spiritual meaning. "Pictures should be inspired by nature but made in the soul of the artist; it is the soul of the individual that counts."

Carr is often associated with her bold, swirling depictions of trees, almost as if they were portraits. She studied their shapes, their energy, and their movement, translating all of it onto the canvas with sweeping brushstrokes and vibrant colors. In this painting, you can practically feel the sunlight filtering through the towering trees, casting playful shadows on the forest floor. It’s a piece full of life and light, a celebration of nature in all its glory.

Born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1871, Carr was a true trailblazer in Modern Art in Canada. Her inspiration came from the rugged beauty of the West Coast—the vast skies, towering trees, and untamed wilderness. Through her art, she makes us feel the wildness and wonder of her beloved landscape, always with a sense of awe and respect for the natural world. Carr’s deep love for nature is on full display in Dancing Sunlight. The trees radiate energy, swaying and shimmering in the glow of the sun. With her bold strokes and earthy palette, Carr creates a landscape that’s not just seen but felt.

It’s no wonder that Carr is one of Canada’s most beloved painters. Her work continues to inspire new generations to see the natural world through her eyes—full of movement, light, and soul.
